Jeffrey Ward was in the middle of a heated argument with his ex-girlfriend last month when he fatally stabbed a man outside the Enfield motel room where she was staying, according to an arrest warrant.
Ward told investigators his ex-girlfriend asked him to stop by the Motel 6 on Hazard Avenue on Sept. 30 so she could pay him for some of his clothes that she had cut up. She also threatened to have five guys jump him.
“Yeah, he’s right here,” the man standing outside the motel room said as soon as Ward arrived, according to the warrant.
Ward told investigators he was scared and didn’t want to get jumped. He struck the man, whom he didn’t know. As they struggled, Ward picked up a knife he saw on the ground and stabbed the man with it, the warrant states.
The man, Hector Sibaja, died at Baystate Medical Center in Massachusetts. Ward was unaware that he had also stabbed Sibaja’s girlfriend, Ginger Ward. She needed nine staples to close the gash in her scalp, the warrant states.
Ward fled the scene of the stabbing, but police found him at a motel in Waterbury.
He is in custody with bail set at $2 million. He is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing on Nov. 28. Ward is charged with murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and two counts of violation of probation.
Sibaja and Wood were staying in Room 244 and had two women, who were staying in nearby rooms, over to smoke marijuana and drink. One of the women, Katrina Montgomery, was identified as Ward’s ex-girlfriend.
Wood told police Montgomery had been receiving phone calls from her ex-boyfriend and seemed afraid. The group had been hanging out for over 20 minutes when Wood heard two knocks on the door.
She looked through the peephole and saw Sibaja, who was outside smoking a cigarette, struggling with a thin man she didn’t recognize, the warrant states.
She opened the door and separated the two men. She pushed the assailant into the railing and he struck her in the head, the warrant states. She said she didn’t see a knife.
Sibaja tried washing the blood off himself in the shower and then collapsed. She and Sibaja were taken to the same hospital.
The other woman who was in the room that night, Yahaira Mendez, told police she saw the Sibaja get stabbed and that Montgomery told her the assailant was her ex-boyfriend. While speaking with investigators, Montgomery either denied knowing the suspect or said she would be found dead if she cooperated, the warrant states.
Ward told investigators he got rid of his clothes and the knife before going to the motel in Waterbury, where police found him. He said he was sorry for the victim and asked if Sibaja had suffered, the warrant states.
