Phoenix, Ariz., March 23, 2011 — On Saturday, March 26, more than 2,000 walkers and people using wheelchairs and scooters will participate in the annual Phoenix Muscle Walk at Tempe Town Lake in Tempe.  The fun event is expected to raise more than $100,000 to help area residents with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle diseases served by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“The Muscle Walk is a very important event for those living with muscular dystrophy, it’s a day when we come together to fight back,” said Kelly Cassutt, MDA Executive Director Phoenix.  “The walk also allows us to celebrate the 2,600 families in Arizona who are living with a neuromuscular disease.”

The Muscle Walk is open to public participants.  Those who wish to support MDA and the fight against neuromuscular disease can join the walk by registering at the event beginning at 7:00 AM.  The Phoenix Muscle Walk gets underway on Saturday, at 9:00 AM.  Individuals and teams are encouraged to raise at least $74 in donations, the cost to fund one minute of MDA research seeking treatments and cures for muscle diseases.  Participants whom make a $74 donation will receive a reusable grocery bag and water bottle.

MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research.  The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy, and education. The first nonprofit organization to be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Medical Association “for significant and lasting contributions to the health and welfare of humanity,” MDA’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.
